Hebrew, the Language of the Jews

To attain an understanding concerning the Hebrew language, we must depend on scarce and scattered materials, which provide us with patchy and sketchy documented evidence of the development of the language and the history and culture of the people who were responsible for the language’s development. Our biggest hurdle has been the length of the period in history that needs to be covered to understand the origin and development of the language, which is over 3000 years.

Over the course of history, the Hebrew people have not had any significant contribution in the fields of politics, conquests, territory or even inventions להמשיך לקרוא

A Short History of the Language

Hebrew is the language of those colloquially referred as the ‘Jews’. Hebrew as a language began its development in written form about 3000 years ago, although the language is believed to have been around for more than 4000 years, according to some scholars. A group of people who were known as the ‘Ivri’ and lived around the area which is the present day Israel, started the practice of writing down and reading the alphabet of their language. It is widely believed that the language of Hebrew was derived to a large extent from the Phoenicians who were another group of people who also lived in the same area prior to the Ivri. Their language, in turn, was inherited from an earlier, more complex form of language, which had thousands of symbols, and the Phoenicians modified and simplified it into a smaller alphabet of only a few dozens. While the language of the Phoenicians was easier, it did not offer the common masses the possibility to learn and understand the language, as reading and writing was a learned man’s prerogative in those days. The Hebrews inherited this language, and they added a few vowels and made the whole language much easier to understand. להמשיך לקרוא

Hebrew Lessons – Learning the Language

When you decide to take Hebrew lessons, you will be surprised to find that Hebrew is a language steeped in history; and, this attracts many people to learn it for varied reasons. Many people find that Hebrew lessons appear difficult because it is so different from English. Hebrew is written and read from right to left, has no vowels and uses a script called “Rashi.”

Before you start taking Hebrew lessons, there are some things you need to know about the language you plan on learning. There are about 7 million people who speak Hebrew, and a vast majority live in Israel. The language had nearly disappeared but was revived and became Israel’s official language.

Generally Hebrew lessons will start with the “alefbet,”or the Hebrew alphabet. It contains 22 letters with no vowels. If there is any need for a vowel, a series of dashed and dots are used above, inside or below the letters. These are called the “nikkud.” This may initially confuse you as you start on your Hebrew lessons, but you need not fear, with practice, it becomes easier.

Just as you do with learning other languages, the best way for you, when you are taking Hebrew lessons, is to focus both on vocabulary and grammar. The most effective way to accomplish this is to immerse yourself in books, magazines, music, or films that are in Hebrew. With Hebrew lessons, it is important to note that knowing perfect grammar and syntax will be totally useless unless you learn to perfect your pronunciation. Simply taking Hebrew lessons on grammar will not suffice; you need to know how to speak the language as well.

If you are looking for something to help you along as you take your Hebrew lessons, you can opt for resource material that allows you to listen and speak Hebrew. Some courses available in the market have an audio component so you are able to listen and repeat the Hebrew lessons being given. Learning any language is quicker if you are immersed in the spoken component of the language. Once you become confident in your pronunciation and your collection of words, learning the grammar becomes very easy.

Hebrew lessons may also prove to be rather simple once you realize that Hebrew sentences follow the same “subject-verb-order” which is the same as in English. Once you keep this in mind, forming Hebrew sentences becomes very easy.

The only challenge that you may encounter as you take your Hebrew lessons, is understanding that there are two genders (feminine and masculine). There may be just three major tenses but there are seven different forms of conjugation of verbs.  As your Hebrew lessons progress, you will learn that the root of Hebrew verbs is always of three letters. And knowing the family of the verbs will make it easy for you to conjugate these verbs.

Hebrew lessons will show you that Hebrew spelling is not at all difficult. Because there are no vowels, all you have to do is to listen to the consonants and write them down as you hear them. There may be some tricky portions as there are letters that are written differently if they happen to come at the end of a word; and there are four letters that have similar sounds.

HEBREW LESSONS-The general Perception

Many associate the Hebrew language with Israelites and Jews. Others, upon hearing the word Hebrew may think of the Bible, The Old Testament, Abraham and Moses.

As time has revolutionized, the perception of the language has grown from a simple acknowledgement of hearing and knowing that the language exists to a point where you will be interested in learning about how modern and classic Hebrew is used.

Hebrew lessons for those who are interested in learning the historical language are now made more accessible to the people of the 21st century. As people continually grow to be more mobile and as millions of people become more frequent visitors of the World Wide Web, even Hebrew lessons are now designed to work for people who prefer to be taught over the Internet.

Many Hebrew lessons are designed in a way where schools and online teaching websites give out specific programs for specific types of students. It should be a plus for you if a school or an Ulpan has set up a Hebrew lessons strategy that will make you comfortable and is easier to work on. Some Hebrew lessons may be understood better if classified and taught in categories specific for a certain type of student or a certain type of lesson.

For example, it is more effective to compile Hebrew lessons about verbs in only one kit or program than mixing it with other Hebrew lessons which will make the lessons more complicated and harder to understand. You should take note that these schools are supposed to make you Hebrew lessons more interesting and appealing to you especially if you already are an adult who would want to make your stay in countries like Israel better and worth it.

You should also consider the degree of comfort and assistance that that the people who are giving you your Hebrew lessons are providing. Patience, a genuine concern and knowledge should be possessed by your teachers.  Also, the amount of time that you have spent for Hebrew lessons should generate good results as a proof that your relationship with your teacher is compatible. This is most true for new students who are taking up Hebrew lessons for the first time. There are thousands of things to learn in just a short period of time.

The Hebrew lessons will most usually start with the basics like the Hebrew alphabet, basic Hebrew lessons on sentence construction and lessons on conversational Hebrew. Being a student of Hebrew lessons may turn out to be very confusing when you reach the technical parts of the lessons but as long as you persevere to achieve you goal and as long as you have a very competent and patient teacher to help you in achieving your goals, you will find the learning process smooth and fun.
